The tape player in my old pickup played both sides at once, one forward and one backward. The sides would flip then, looping. The truck nearing its end I recorded a few tapes in the cab. One of them is here. Earlier in the truck’s life I recorded a tape while reentering the United States from Canada. A few of these recordings were made in a room on the second floor of my grandparents’ house after their deaths. The windows were almost entirely covered at the time by piles of boxes, papers and toys. The recordings were made wearing a red robe and a red spangled headband. I was mostly invisible at the time, or thought myself to be. My aunt gave me her daughter’s karaoke machine to sell at a yard sale there but I never put it out. It provided the amplification. The taperecorder I have now has a “Reverse Time” function. It belongs to Mathias, and maybe Baus before. Back in the day Steve’s had a joystick. He changed his name for the recordings. I’ll just use mine. I’ve used others. Perhaps I can say that I arranged this, or for this. Many others are used here, and appear. In the cab and in the robe, hunched over the karaoke machine, in the dome formed there, beaming from and against my body in waves a space opened alongside life. There the dead sound again. These machines helped me hear them.
