about

Four poems from Beth Murray's The Island (Second Story Books, 2008), recorded by Rob Schlegel and Brandon Shimoda at Beth Murray's home in Alameda, CA, on March 28, 2008.

Beth Murray's The Island—writes Alice Notley—is starkly lucid but mysterious: pain has changed the poet's perception of "the world" into a more symbolic, more monolithic truth. Words like "tunnel" and "island" refer to what lies on the common map, but also to shapes of self and body. And the truer animals—especially aquatic creatures—are always nearby, in this impeccable, essential poem that displaces, then relocates, "as your voice grows."

The Island is available via SPD: bit.ly/1xPjsPC.

Beth passed away on the night of Wednesday, October 8, 2014, in Midpines, California.
